Online applications are scheduled to open on 27 October 2026 on rrbapply.gov.in and close on 25 November 2026. The detailed notification, with RRB-wise vacancies and category-wise break-up, is expected just before the window opens.
This is the first time Station Master posts are being filled through a separate CEN. Until now they were part of the NTPC graduate-level recruitment. A Railway Board letter dated 7 October 2026 sets out the new process: a single-stage computer-based test (CBT), followed by a computer-based aptitude test (CBAT), document verification and a medical exam. Why Station Master Now Has a Separate Exam
Station Masters were earlier recruited through the NTPC graduate-level CEN, which used two CBT stages for several posts at once. The Railway Board’s letter of 7 October 2026 says that from 2026 the post will be notified separately, with its own single-stage CBT followed by an aptitude test. The letter also introduces a new syllabus that tests mathematics, data interpretation, logic and mental ability rather than general awareness.

The short notice puts the total at about 1,250 posts. The break-up by RRB, zone and category (UR, OBC, EWS, SC, ST) will come with the detailed notification. Each candidate applies to one RRB only, so check the vacancies in your preferred RRB before you choose.
RRB Station Master Eligibility 2026
Educational Qualification
A graduation degree in any discipline from a recognised university, or its equivalent. Final-year students should check the cut-off date in the detailed notification, because the degree must usually be completed by the closing date.
Age Limit
The Railway Board letter gives the age limit for Station Master as 20 to 33 years in the normal course, which includes a three-year relaxation allowed under an earlier Board letter of 2018. Several reports of the short notice give it as 20 to 30 years as on 1 January 2027. The detailed notification will settle the exact limit and the cut-off date, so do not decide on eligibility near the upper limit until it is out. Reserved categories get the usual relaxation as per government rules.
Medical Standard
The post requires medical standard A-2, which includes strict vision requirements. The Railway Board letter also states that the post is not suitable for persons with benchmark disabilities (visual, hearing, locomotor or other categories). Check the vision norms in the detailed notification before applying, especially if you wear glasses.
RRB Station Master Selection Process 2026
- Single-stage CBT: 100 marks, 120 minutes.
- CBAT (aptitude test): Candidates up to 8 times the vacancies in each RRB are shortlisted from the CBT merit. CBAT is qualifying, and only those who pass it are considered further.
- Final merit: 70% weightage to the CBT score and 30% to the CBAT score.
- Document verification and medical examination for candidates in the final merit.
RRB Station Master Exam Pattern and Syllabus 2026
The CBT syllabus is new for this cycle. As per Annexure-A of the Railway Board letter:

Note that there is no general awareness section in the new syllabus. Two-thirds of the paper tests mathematics, science and data handling, so candidates from a commerce or arts background should start with those sections. Whether there is negative marking will be stated in the detailed notification.
RRB Station Master Application Fee 2026
The fee will be confirmed in the detailed notification. In recent RRB recruitments, the fee has been ₹500 for general, OBC and EWS candidates (₹400 refunded after appearing in the CBT) and ₹250 for SC, ST, women, ex-servicemen, PwBD, minority and EBC candidates (refunded after appearing in the CBT, minus bank charges). The fee is paid online.

- Pay the fee online and submit the form before 25 November 2026.
- Download and keep the confirmation page and your registration number.
Apply only through rrbapply.gov.in. RRBs do not charge any money for appointments, so ignore anyone offering jobs for a payment.
RRB Station Master Salary 2026
Station Master is a Level 6 post under the 7th Pay Commission with a starting basic pay of ₹35,400 a month. Dearness allowance, house rent allowance, transport allowance and other railway benefits are paid on top, so the gross monthly salary at joining is well above the basic pay and varies by posting city.
RRB Station Master Admit Card 2026
