What the Government Order Says

The proposal came from the Chairman and Managing Director of TNPDCL and was approved by the Energy Department on 28 October 2026. The order allows TNPSC to recruit 8,000 Field Assistants in a phased manner over two calendar years.

The government has also worked out the cost of these appointments. Each Field Assistant is estimated to cost TNPDCL about ₹35,548 a month, which includes allowances and the employer’s pension contribution. For all 8,000 posts, the annual financial commitment is put at roughly ₹341.26 crore: ₹213.28 crore a year for the 2027 batch and another ₹127.97 crore a year for the 2028 batch.

The scale of the hiring makes more sense against the staffing gap. DT Next, citing the same order, reported that TNPDCL has 1,10,960 sanctioned posts, of which 53,575 are vacant. Across the four state power utilities, about 65,921 of 1,40,635 sanctioned posts were lying vacant.

Field Assistant Salary and Pay Breakdown

The pay scale approved for the post is ₹18,800 – ₹59,900, with a starting basic pay of ₹18,800. The government’s monthly cost estimate of ₹35,548 per employee works out as below. Dearness Allowance is calculated at 60% of basic pay, and the CPS figure is the employer’s 10% share on basic pay plus DA.

ComponentAmount per month
Basic pay₹18,800
Dearness Allowance (60%)₹11,280
House Rent Allowance₹1,800
City Compensatory Allowance₹360
Medical Allowance₹300
Employer’s CPS contribution₹3,008
Total cost to TNPDCL₹35,548

Keep in mind that ₹35,548 is the cost to the employer, not the take-home salary. A new Field Assistant’s in-hand pay will be lower, because the employer’s pension share is not paid out and the employee’s own CPS contribution and other deductions come off the gross. HRA and CCA also vary with the place of posting.

Eligibility: What to Expect

TNPSC has not published the eligibility rules for this round. The best guide is the last Field Assistant recruitment it ran. In 2025, TNPSC filled 1,794 Field Assistant posts through the Combined Technical Services Examination (ITI Level) – II, and the rules then were:

  • Qualification: National Trade Certificate (NTC) or National Apprenticeship Certificate (NAC) in Electrician, Wireman, or Electrical trade under the Centre of Excellence Scheme.
  • Age: at least 18 years and below 32 years as on 1 July 2025, with relaxation of the upper age limit for reserved categories.
  • Application fee: ₹100, with exemptions for eligible categories.
  • Exam: held on 16 November 2025 in two papers (Paper I in the morning, Paper II in the afternoon).

These are 2025 conditions, given here only for reference. The 2026–27 notification may change the age cut-off date, fee or trade list, so check the new notification before you apply.

Selection Process

The selection stages for the 8,000 posts will be fixed in the notification. In the previous round, candidates took a written examination through TNPSC, followed by a physical test that included pole climbing, and then certificate verification. TNPDCL had even allowed pole-climbing shoes for the physical test. A similar structure is likely, but wait for the official scheme of examination.

How to Apply Once the Notification Is Out

The application form will be available only on the TNPSC website. Here is how the process usually works:

  1. Go to the TNPSC website and open the Field Assistant notification when it appears under the latest notifications.
  2. Complete your One Time Registration (OTR) on the TNPSC application portal if you have not done so already. Existing OTR holders can log in directly.
  3. Read the notification fully, especially qualification, age and community-wise vacancy details.
  4. Fill in the online form with your personal, educational and ITI trade details.
  5. Upload your photograph, signature and certificates in the format asked for.
  6. Pay the fee online, unless you are eligible for exemption.
  7. Check every entry, submit the form and save a copy of the application.

No application link is live yet. Ignore any website or message asking for payment for “TNPDCL Field Assistant registration” before TNPSC opens the form.

Documents to Keep Ready

  • SSLC (Class 10) mark sheet and certificate
  • ITI certificate: NTC or NAC in the Electrician or Wireman trade
  • Community certificate, if applicable
  • Aadhaar or another valid photo ID
  • Recent passport-size photograph and scanned signature
  • Any certificate needed for age relaxation or special category claims

Preparing Early

With the first 5,000 appointments planned for 2027, candidates with an Electrician or Wireman ITI certificate have a head start if they begin now. Revise ITI trade theory (basic electricity, wiring, safety rules, distribution lines and meters), along with Tamil and general studies, since TNPSC exams for ITI-level posts have included a general paper. Practising pole climbing is also worth it, given that it has been part of the physical test.
