CBSE Two Board Exams 2027: Class 10 Rules Explained

CBSE two board exams 2027 for Class 10: who must write the February exam, who can take the May attempt, the three-subject limit and what 2026 results showed.

Every Class 10 student in a CBSE school will write the board exam at least once this session, and some will write a few papers twice. The CBSE two board exams 2027 cycle is the second run of the scheme, and the first one where families can look back at a complete year: a compulsory exam in February–March 2026, an optional second attempt in May, and a combined result in July.

That record answers most of what parents ask, and it shows the limits too. The second exam is not a free retake of the whole board exam, and a student who misses too many papers in the first round loses the second chance altogether. Below, we go through the rules as CBSE has written them in its notices and circulars, what the 2026 numbers show, and what the board has not announced yet for 2027.

  • First exam: compulsory for every Class 10 candidate, held in February–March
  • Second exam: optional, held in May; improvement allowed in up to three of Science, Mathematics, Social Science and languages
  • Absent in three or more subjects in the first exam: placed in Essential Repeat, no second exam
  • Final result: for regular students, the better of the two performances counts
  • 2027 date sheet: not released as of 24 October 2026
  • LOC late-fee window: 22 to 30 October 2026; corrections 2 to 4 November 2026

What are the CBSE two board exams 2027, and where did the idea come from?

CBSE approved the norms on 25 June 2025. The change follows a National Education Policy 2020 recommendation that board exams be made less high-stakes by allowing up to two attempts in a school year. In its LOC circular for 2026-27, the board refers to the scheme as the “Two Board Policy dated 26.06.2025”.

The first exam, held in February and March, is the main examination; the second, in May, is optional. As PTI reported at the time, the first phase is mandatory and the second optional; CBSE examination controller Sanyam Bhardwaj said the first phase would be held in February and the second in May. Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan called it a much-needed step that would reduce exam stress and give students more flexibility, News On AIR reported.

The scheme covers Class 10 only. Class 12 still has one main exam followed by a supplementary exam, and our CBSE 12th date sheet 2027 page tracks that schedule. For parents in Maharishi Vidya Mandir schools, the group’s own branch list shows 93 CBSE-affiliated schools (see our MVM school list by state), so most Class 10 students in that network fall under these rules.

Who has to write the first board exam?

Everyone. CBSE’s clarification of 14 February 2026 says in plain words that appearing in the first board examination is mandatory for all students. The 2026-27 LOC circular, issued in September 2026, repeats this and tells schools to fill the LOC for the first exam for every Class 10 candidate.

Annexure C of that circular lists four groups who sit the main exam: fresh Class 10 students, students placed in compartment the previous year (their second chance), students declared Essential Repeat the previous year, and students who passed last year but want to improve their performance.

Important: The LOC for the second exam is filled only after the first exam is over. A student cannot skip February–March and plan to write only in May.

Who can sit the second board exam?

This is where the rules narrow. The second exam is meant for students who already have a result from the first exam and want to change it, either by raising marks or by clearing a subject.

The LOC circular for 2026-27 lists the eligible groups:

  • Improvement in up to three main subjects, for candidates who appeared in the main exam of the same year
  • First or third chance compartment, for candidates placed in compartment that year or the year before
  • Compartment plus improvement, for a student in compartment who also wants to improve a subject other than the one being cleared
  • Improvement for students who passed by replacement of a subject

The three-subject limit

Passed students may improve in any three subjects from Science, Mathematics, Social Science and languages. Three is the ceiling. The second exam is also tied to the LOC: only the subjects the school filled in the main-exam LOC can be opted for in May. In 2026, CBSE allowed one switch at this stage, between Mathematics Standard and Mathematics Basic in either direction, and refused every other change of subject.

The compartment category

A student whose first-exam result reads compartment can sit the second exam under the compartment category, and can take improvement papers under the same scheme. According to CBSE’s circular of 15 April 2026, the LOC for first-chance compartment candidates was submitted only by the school concerned.

Who is shut out: the Essential Repeat rule

If a student does not appear in three or more subjects in the first exam, CBSE will not allow the second exam, whatever the reason. Such students are placed in the Essential Repeat category and can write only in the next year’s main exam in February. The 14 February notice adds that the board will not respond to requests on this point. News On AIR reported that the clarification came after parents asked whether a child who missed the first exam for medical or personal reasons could simply take the second one. The answer was no.

Two smaller restrictions sit alongside: additional subjects are not permitted after passing Class 10, and stand-alone subjects are not allowed.

What happens to internal assessment, winter-bound schools and the final result?

When CBSE approved the scheme in June 2025, it said internal assessment would be conducted only once in the academic session, as reported by PTI. Read with that rule, the May attempt does not bring a second round of school-based marks.

Winter-bound schools were promised a choice that others do not have. When the scheme was approved in June 2025, CBSE said Class 10 students from winter-bound schools could appear in either phase, as reported by PTI and Business Standard. Families in these schools should confirm the 2027 arrangement with their school.

On the final result, CBSE’s press release of 18 July 2026 is clear: for regular students, the better of the two performances is taken. The April 2026 circular added two practical points. If a student’s name is in the second-exam LOC and the fee is paid, but the student does not turn up, the main-exam result stands as final. And the second exam was set on the same syllabus as the main exam.

Note: When the scheme was announced in June 2025, second-exam results were expected in June. In the first year, CBSE declared them on 18 July 2026. Keep that gap in mind while planning Class 11 subject choices.

How did the first year go in 2026?

The first exam ran from Tuesday, 17 February to Wednesday, 11 March 2026. Results came on Wednesday, 15 April 2026, with an overall pass percentage of 93.70%. According to Free Press Journal, 24,71,777 candidates appeared and 23,16,008 passed.

The second exam followed from Friday, 15 May to Thursday, 21 May 2026, as per the date sheet of 23 April 2026. Mathematics Standard and Basic opened on 15 May, English on 16 May, Science on 18 May, Hindi, most regional and foreign languages and a few skill and music papers on 19 May, Sanskrit, Painting, Information Technology and Artificial Intelligence on 20 May, and Social Science closed it on 21 May. Most papers ran from 10:30 am to 1:30 pm, and the two-hour papers ended at 12:30 pm.

Results were declared on Saturday, 18 July 2026. CBSE’s figures: 6,64,027 students registered and 6,63,777 appeared. Of the 5,13,955 who wrote improvement papers, 3,08,095 (59.95%) scored better than in the main exam. In the compartment category, 1,49,822 appeared and 78,503 passed, a pass rate of 52.40% against 48.68% in 2025. With both exams combined, the overall Class 10 pass percentage reached 96.78%.

Read another way, about two in five improvement candidates did not move up. The better-score rule meant they lost nothing on the marksheet, but the extra preparation still cost them time between April and May. Students weighing the second exam for 2027 should look at that number honestly before signing up for three subjects.

First exam vs second exam: how do they compare?

The two exams share a syllabus, but the rules around them differ quite a bit. This table puts the 2026 experience next to the rules for each.

How do you opt for the second exam through your school?

Regular students do not apply to CBSE directly. The school submits the names and fee on the board’s LOC portal. The steps below follow the 2026 process set out in CBSE’s circular of 15 April 2026; the 2027 schedule will come in a fresh circular after the first-exam results.

  1. Check the first-exam result and decide which subjects, three at most, you want to improve, or confirm whether you are in the compartment category.
  2. Tell the school before its internal cut-off. In 2026 the LOC and fee window for the second exam ran from 16 to 20 April, with a late-fee phase on 21 and 22 April.
  3. If you want to switch between Mathematics Standard and Mathematics Basic, say so at this stage. No other subject change was accepted.
  4. Check the entry the school makes for you. CBSE said there would be no change in schedule and no correction once LOC submission closed.
  5. Changed your mind? Ask the school to withdraw your name while the window is open; the 2026 circular allowed this. If you stay registered and do not appear, your main-exam marks remain final.
  6. Get the admit card once CBSE releases it (the board’s admit-card notice for the 2026 second exam was dated 5 May) and write the papers on the dates in the second-exam date sheet.

What is known, and not known, about CBSE two board exams 2027?

Known so far. The first exam will be held in February–March 2027, according to the LOC circular. The normal-fee LOC window ran from Thursday, 24 September to Wednesday, 21 October 2026, at ₹1,600 per candidate for five subjects in India and ₹320 for each additional subject. The late-fee window runs from Thursday, 22 October to Friday, 30 October 2026, with ₹2,000 per candidate on top of the normal fee. These dates are for online payment; schools paying by bank challan had earlier cut-offs (17 October for normal fee, 26 October with late fee). Data verification slips follow, and errors in names, date of birth or subjects can be corrected from Monday, 2 November to Wednesday, 4 November 2026. After that, the circular says, no correction will be allowed.

Not announced yet (as of 24 October 2026): the date sheet for the first exam, any dates for the May 2027 second exam, the second-exam LOC schedule and the result dates. For comparison, last year CBSE put out a tentative Class 10 date sheet on 24 September 2025 and the final one on 30 October 2025. We update the schedule on our CBSE 10th date sheet 2027 page as soon as the board releases it.

CBSE is not the only board with two attempts. Karnataka’s tentative SSLC time table 2027 already lists an Exam-1 from 22 March and an Exam-2 from 24 May 2027, while CISCE students, who are outside the CBSE scheme, can follow their schedule on our ICSE 10th time table 2027 page. All our 2027 board coverage sits under Board Exams.
